Backyard Harvest

Backyard Harvest helps Santa Barbara do more with less by putting our untapped food resources to work. We harvest the under-utilized food growing in our backyards and collect the extra produce from our local farms and farmers markets. This fresh, healthy produce is then distributed to the less fortunate members of our community through the Unity Shoppe. Some of the collected food is also distributed to the Santa Barbara Unified School District, in an effort to increase the amount of nutritious local produce in student lunches.

The pilot phase of our project has yielded great results by collecting 40,000 pounds of food that would have otherwise gone to waste. Backyard Harvest also provides Learning Service Projects for elementary school students, allowing them to participate directy in our local food chain by harvesting food that supplies their own cafeterias.
